Project Overview
This BMW 5 Series (F10) 2018 was brought to S&S Motors LLC by an owner preparing the vehicle for private sale. Despite being mechanically sound, years of accumulated oil residue, road grime, and oxidised plastic had left the engine bay looking tired and neglected. The owner wanted a complete engine bay restoration to bring it back to showroom condition and maximise the vehicle's resale value.
Our team performed a full engine bay degreasing, component restoration, minor gasket replacement, and protective dressing application to deliver a result that exceeded the client's expectations before the car ever went to market.
What We Did
- Full electrical masking of fuse box, ECU housing, alternator, and all exposed connectors
- Battery disconnection and removal for safe handling throughout the process
- Professional alkaline degreaser application with controlled dwell time
- Soft brush agitation across all surfaces including firewall, subframe, and component housings
- Low-pressure rinse with careful water direction away from sensitive areas
- Compressed air blow-dry to remove moisture from all cavities and crevices
- Valve cover gasket replacement to eliminate active oil seepage
- Plastic engine cover restoration using heat treatment and trim restorer
- Corroded battery terminals and bracket cleaned and treated
- All rubber hoses inspected — cracked coolant hoses replaced
- Protective satin dressing applied to all plastic covers, hoses, and rubber components
- Final inspection under workshop lighting to verify complete coverage and finish
The Challenge
The biggest challenge on this restoration was the extent of oil contamination around the valve cover area. The leaked oil had baked onto surrounding components over thousands of miles, bonding to plastic covers, rubber hoses, and the firewall. Standard degreasing alone was not sufficient — multiple application passes with agitation were required to fully lift the hardened residue without damaging the underlying surfaces.
The oxidised BMW cam cover presented a separate challenge. Repainting was considered but our technicians opted for a heat restoration process combined with a premium trim restorer to bring back the original finish without the risk of paint peeling near high-temperature engine components.
Products Used
- Degreaser: Professional-grade alkaline engine degreaser safe for all engine bay materials
- Agitation: Soft detailing brushes in multiple sizes for components, crevices, and flat surfaces
- Gasket Replacement: OEM-spec BMW valve cover gasket kit
- Plastic Restoration: Heat gun treatment followed by long-term trim restorer with UV protection
- Terminal Treatment: Battery terminal cleaner and anti-corrosion protective spray
- Protective Dressing: Satin finish rubber and plastic dressing for all underbonnet components
- Hose Replacement: OEM-compatible coolant hoses for affected circuit sections
The Results
The finished engine bay looked remarkable — clean, dark, and factory-fresh. Every component was free of grease, oil, and oxidisation. The restored cam cover, dressed hoses, and treated firewall gave the bay the appearance of a vehicle with a fraction of its actual mileage. The valve cover gasket replacement also resolved the oil seepage completely, leaving no trace of the previous leak.
The owner was stunned by the transformation. The vehicle sold within a week of listing at the asking price, with multiple buyers commenting specifically on the condition of the engine bay during their inspection. A clean engine bay builds buyer confidence — and this restoration delivered exactly that.
Client Feedback
"I honestly did not think the engine bay could look like that again. S&S Motors LLC did an absolutely incredible job — every single part of it looks spotless. The car sold in days and I know the engine bay played a big part in that. I will be bringing every car I own here from now on." — Daniel P. Hargrove, Columbus OH
